Blogger of the week, Waffle style.

So I think that it may be time to start a special her at WB, start small ya know. I've found that in my constant searching I often run across fellow bloggers that have very useful information. So what to do with these fellow up an comers than try to pull to gather. So today's featured blogger is the Krypt0ni4n blog.

In the past Krypt0ni4n has featured posts of the technological persuasion very similar to that which I try and provide through Waffle Blog. I stumbled upon the blog through a post on anonymous web proxies (Proxy Bypasser).

Keep it up Ernest.

Benefit of Cutting Grass

Ok so while cutting grass still remains a household chore, I realized (yes while cutting grass) that trimming your square yardage (no pun intended) that there are more benefits than one might first realize.

- The first benefit of keeping your rolling planes in trim is just that, it maintains the grass and allows it to grow healthily, on top of that the clippings that are produced create valuable compost whether you bag or mulch. This of course considering that you don't just ship off your excess greenery to the dump, which I as a fellow lawn maintnance hobbyist do not recommend.

- This next benefit has much less to do with the global environment (unless you are of some political power) and much more to do with your personal mental state. I've often found myself going off to mow the lawn frustrated with something. While I admit operating machinery while in an unconcentrated state of mind could be bad, for most of us mowing the lawn is very much routine and you might be surprised how much of the course you have memorized if you mow often. But I digress. After finishing my route I often find myself in a much more sable state of mind, as both the repetitive laps around the lawn and repetitive sound of the mower allows my mind to wander on in its own loops and trails thinking out problems that may have been bothering me when I first started.

- Thirdly, getting your grass cut gives you a very satisfying feeling of accomplishment, great for those lazy Sunday afternoons when you don't feel like doing much. Just hop on the mower make some vegetative carnage. Afterwards you may feel so encouraged by your accomplishment you may go on to larger tasks, overall ending in a very productive day.

- This last tip is for those who want to get back to the lawn care roots and operate a push mower. Pushing around that machine will definitely give you a workout, relative to the size of the job of course, and is a great way to get started on a weight loss plan or just become more active.

Happy Mowing!!

Tips: Getting the most out of your pen drive.

Recently, my 256MB pen drive had gotten buried under the mass that is my office, and I remained oblivious to its disappearance. Once I did finally find a need for it, and then once I finally actually found it, upon plugging it in I discovered that all the file structure was amazingly cluttered from the last time I used it, I had to hunt through directories, many times twice, to find what I wanted, applications were cluttered with old information, the whole thing was a mess. So after cleaning the whole thing up and streamlining its operation (yes I made notes on how I wanted to do this) I now share some of the tools/methods I used.

  • directory structure

Unix is the best example of good directory structure, very short, meaningful directories that break things down into categories. Example, on my pen drive I have a Programs, Tools, Texts, and Docs directory. These directories cover most everything I tend to want to have on my portable drive.

Under the programs directory I have various "portable software". I.E: portable firefox, portable filezilla, and similar programs.

Within tools I have various portable executables such as netcat and nmap, as well as a hacked version of putty called portaPutTy.

Under Texts, I have various documents in plain text format, unlike the Docs directory which contains only documents which I chose to store in a separate format such as encrypted LockNote files or html files.

  • TrueCrypt Volumes

In my opinion programs like TrueCrypt and portable flash drives are a match made in digital heaven. With such volume and portability, the amount of sensitive information that can be carried, and lost, on a flash drive make protecting said information a very high priority. TrueCrypt allows you to create virtual partitions on portable media, or even encrypt the physical drive with today's fastest and most secure algorithms in existence.

  • Program Launcher

Such programs may sound very trivial, but when directories start getting deeper and deeper, finding needed programs and running them quickly can make a flash drive really perform. That's why I like to use Pstart to launch Portable Firefox and the like, I even have batch scripts which perform certain command line operations with a simple click. Pstar will also minimize to the system tray with an Icon and will give you a menu to launch programs from without opening another window on your desktop.

VoIP Encryption

This recently from wired news a review of Zfone, an open source VoIP encryption software.

Phil Zimmermann, yes the same guy that is credited with producing PGP, Is now working on a new thorn in the NSA's side, Zfone is currently still in beta versions and as such is not widely used/usable but it is definitely a start (and darn good one at that) at protecting internet phone calls. The review at wired covers many details (which I wont go into here) of Zfone and a few counterparts.

"The protocol is based on SRTP, a system that uses the 256-bit AES cipher and adds to that a 3,000-bit key exchange that produces the codes callers can read off to one another."
